Gosang's Tunnel - 27 Feb 2016
We arrived at Currarong at 17:30. It took us a lot longer to get there than I thought. We started out from the car park at Abraham's Bosum Reserve and crossed the small foot bridge and followed the fire trail to Mermaids Beach. Just before we got to the beach we saw the sign to Gosang's Tunnel. We followed a foot track to the cliffs where we admired the view of the swell crashing into the rocky shoreline. We heard a wind gusting sound which we thought was a little unusual but I suppose not un-expected on the cliffs.
We found the entrance of the tunnel. Amy was not keen to go inside so I went by myself. I waddled through tunnel to the outside and was treated to a magnificent view of the sea crashing against the rocks below. The swell very large and powerful from the affects of Cyclone Wilson that had hit Fiji about a week previously. After a few minutes a series of waves crashed into the rocks below and pushed water up through the slot that runs part of the way along the bottom of the tunnel. I head a very powerful rush of air as the water pushed the air up out of the slot into the tunnel - this is what we had heard before - but this time it was much more powerful. After admiring the view and taking more photographs I crawled back through the tunnel. As I neared the end I heard rumble and a few seconds later a powerful gush of wind blasted past me carrying dust and debris from the within the tunnel. As I emerged from the tunnel the cloud of dust was still billowing around the entrance of the tunnel. Had this happened when I was further in the tunnel it would have been a disturbing and unsettling experience.
We explored the cliffs so Amy could get a closer view of the sea crashing on the rocks, and then went along to Mermaid's Beach. We marvelled at the power of the water crashing against the rocks but had to go as it was about 19:30 and getting dark. I was keen to get back on the fire trail before dark. We arrived back at the car park in darkness at 20:10 and then headed home.
